Mathews Architecture. P.A. was the local architect working in partnership with Peckham Guyton Albers & Viets, Architects and Exhibition Designers of St. Louis, MO on the new landmark Momentum: Science and Health Adventure Park in Asheville, NC.
The new 40,000 s.f. LEED™ certified building was to be located on an approximately 8.75 acre site, and was designed to reflect the Health Adventure’s mission: the promotion of self-awareness and discovery.
The site was to include an entry garden, two themed children’s gardens, an outdoor treehouse climbing structure and a pedal powered monorail train.
Inside, the first floor houses public spaces would have exhibit areas, theaters, classrooms, retail space, restaurant, storage, and a workshop. The second floor was to house administrative offices and back of house mechanical and electrical areas.
Mathews Architecture, P.A. was to be responsible for the design of second floor spaces, the specification of LEED™ certified materials, and the LEED™ management and certification process for the entire facility.
The "Great Recession" hit the economy just as the capital campaign was gearing up and before construction could begin. As a result, this project never went beyond the initial work to prepare the site.
